Undoubtedly, we have to make numerous decisions in our life from simple choices to complex ones. While some people believe that children should make decisions on their own from an early age, others argue that adults should have a certain engagement in the decision-making process. I strongly support the former opinion, and will elaborate on my reasons below.
Children can benefit from making decision independently by learning what responsibility is. More specifically, for each decision young people make on their own, they can learn the importance of responsibility when encountering the consequences of making-decision. For example, children who use their allowance to buy things they want on their own, can learn the value of money and tend to be more responsible for that. They will know once they use all money immediately, they have to wait until next month to get their allowance, helping them to become more mindful of their spending habits.
Through having decision-making on their own, children can have more chances to discover their true passions and interests. That is, it can be seen that in parents have a significant impact on their kids’ decisions, particularly in Asian countries, leading to young people prioritize their parents’ happiness over their own. According to a survey conducted by National Taiwan University, 40% of respondents admitted that they regreted to choose their college major based on their parents’ preferences because they lacked experience in independent decision-making at an early age and don’t know how to choose what would make them happy. As a result, they ended up in jobs they were not interested in.
In conclusion, based on the aforementioned, adults should allow young individuals to make their decisions independently from an early stage because they can learn how to take responsibilities and can earn more experience.
