There is a belief that individuals’ driving license must be updated every 5 years. It would assist in ensuring that drivers are staying up to date with changes. However, there would also be drawback like financial difficulties in terms of examination.
One evident disadvantage of retaking driving test is financial hardship. High cost of examination which definitely would not stay at one price due to inflation, would make poor people who have to have driving licenses suffer, as they would give a huge part of their money to be able to drive. For example, in Uzbekistan, since December 1st 2023, prices in examination centres have doubled and increased by 100%. And if it was a prerequisite to retake the examination, Uzbek people would pay a third of a salary.
On the other hand, there is an obvious benefit of updating the driving permit, which is familiarization with traffic laws, rules and regulations. Traffic laws are constantly developing to keep up with new technologies, road infrastructure changes and safety measures. Redoing the driving test would assist individuals in staying informed with these changes and ensure that they are driving vehicles within the law. For instance, there is a new rule in terms of electric scooter, which says that its users must not exceed the speed limit by more than 50 km/h. So, people with old driving licenses are not aware of that rule and only retaking the test would help them.
In conclusion, while there is a drawback such as increasing costs of the examination, there is also an advantage of redoing the driving test, like keeping up with the newest changes in traffic laws.
