Band 8+: Some people think that modern communication technology has a negative impact on our social relationships. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that smartphones and computers are damaging social skills and relationships. While I agree that technology can cause certain problems, I believe that it can also improve communication if people use it responsibly.

To begin with, technology may negatively impact face-to-face communication. Many individuals spend long hours on their phones instead of interacting with the people around them, which reduces the quality of real conversations. As a result, some people, especially teenagers, become less confident in expressing their feelings or maintaining eye contact. For example, it is common to see friends sitting together in a café but focusing on their screens instead of talking to each other, which weakens their social connection.

On the other hand, technology can also have a positive influence on relationships. Modern communication tools make it easier for people to stay in touch with loved ones, even when they live far apart. Video calls, messages and social media allow families and friends to maintain strong emotional bonds. In addition, technology helps people build new friendships through shared interests, especially for individuals who are shy in real-life situations. For instance, many people have found close friends through online communities and interest-based groups.

To sum up, although technology can reduce the amount of face-to-face communication, it can also bring people closer when used in a balanced way. In my view, the problem is not technology itself, but how people choose to use it.
