In this day and age, it is argued that advances in modern communication technology exert more influence on social relationships. While acknowledging the rationale behind this assertion, I firmly disagree with this belief for several reasons that will be elucidated in this essay.
On the one hand, proponents of this idea believe that modern ways of staying connected do present some notable negative demerits of social relationships, especially due to concerns about online privacy and cybercrime. The widespread use of social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram has speedily replaced traditional face-to-face interactions. These platforms often collect and exploit extensive amounts of private information along with highly sophisticated fraudulent practices, leading to data breaches and various cyber-scam crimes. Consequently, individuals are likely to be undermined and intrusive on online relationships, negatively impacting the quality of life. However, such a perspective oversimplifies the matter that these issues often come from how people use technology and the lack of regulation and online literacy. Many users, for instance, who fall victim online often are not aware of basic safety practices, like verifying the identity of strangers, and avoid sharing personal information on unsecured platforms, which culminates in their information being exploited for illicit purposes..
On the other hand, there are some cogent reasons why I contend that cutting-edge communication technologies provide more significant long-term benefits. To begin with, in the past, people who lived far away from their families often found it difficult to communicate or keep in touch with their parents due to the geographical gaps. Nevertheless, the growing popularity of social media has made communication features such as video calls, and direct messaging more accessible, enabling people to maintain relationships over long distances and strengthen their emotional bonds. Another notable reason is that many well-paid and prestigious jobs nowadays involve heavy workloads and demanding deadlines, which often leave individuals with limited time for their families. That is to say, digital workspaces and social networking platforms through tools like email, instant messaging, and virtual meetings, enable many tasks to be completed more efficiently or even remotely. This helps reduce commuting and workload pressure, allowing individuals to devote more time to their children or partners and ultimately foster stronger, more sustainable relationships.
In conclusion, while innovative strategies of human interaction can, to a certain extent, pose serious challenges , I still maintain that modern communication tools are far more advantageous by virtue of global communication and reduced working pressure.
