It is considered by many that insufficient amount of garbage is recycled and the authotities should make recycling mandatory in order to promote this process. This essay agrees with this statement for several reasons. Firstly, sorting containers are not provided everywhere, forcing people to throw litter to one bin. Secondly, despite advertisings and campaigns that encourage people to recycle, not every citizen tends to comply.
Each household produces tons of waste annualy. However, a considerable number of families, living in the blocks of flats, have no access to special containers, due to the absence of those. Consequently, created garbage that could be potentially divided into four categories (paper, plastic, glass and metal) is thrown into the one bin and eventually occurs on the landfills, contaminating the environment. As an illustration, in 2022, the canalization in London was filled with hygiene products and oil because people were throwing them into the toilet. This “ball” was called “fatberg” and weighted dozens of tons.
With the aim of increasing the popularity of recycling, volunteers and local authorities launched various campaigns and use social media as a resourse of advertising. However, old generations are not empowered to decrease their footprints. Because sorting litter is not neccessary for living in an apartment, many individuals neglect this request. Therefore, the authorities can create the law that will require people to recycle domestic garbage and watch their ecological footprint outdoors.
