Hosting international events has always been a subject of debate. While some people argue that such occasions bring significant advantages to the host country, others believe that the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives before giving my own opinion.
On the one hand, international events can generate substantial economic and social benefits. To begin with, they attract thousands of foreign visitors, which boosts the tourism industry and stimulates local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services. Moreover, these events often lead to improvements in infrastructure, such as modern airports, sports facilities, and public transport, which continue to benefit citizens long after the event ends. Finally, hosting prestigious competitions or festivals enhances the international reputation of the country, allowing it to showcase its culture and hospitality on a global stage.
On the other hand, critics claim that hosting such events is an unnecessary burden. First of all, organizing them requires enormous financial investment, which could otherwise be spent on public services like healthcare and education. Additionally, many of the newly built facilities may become “white elephants” once the event is over, meaning they remain underused but costly to maintain. Furthermore, large gatherings often raise security concerns and may have negative environmental consequences, such as increased pollution and waste.
In my view, although there are some drawbacks, the benefits of hosting international events outweigh the disadvantages if the resources are managed efficiently. A well-organized event not only improves infrastructure but also strengthens the country’s global image and fosters cultural exchange. Therefore, I believe that hosting international events is generally a positive step for any nation.
