Band it: These days, traffic jams and air pollution have become major challenges among urban populations. It is believed that public transport should be free of charge for all citizens because it would be an effective and convenient solution to these issues. While I think that making public transport free could offer many benefits, I do not fully support this idea because it has some negative consequences and it would not be a sustainable solution on its own.
To begin with, free public transport encourages people to use buses, trains, and subways instead of using their personal vehicles. This improvement really reduces the number of cars on the road, leading to less traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions released into the air, and it will significantly decrease the amount of car accidents in urban areas. Moreover, not everyone can afford to pay for public transportation, and making it free would be beneficial for low-income individuals.
On the other hand, some governments cannot subsidize public transport because of financial weakness. As a result, this will increase the cost of bills for people to pay. Additionally, it makes public transport a more overcrowded place and reduces the service quality unless major investments are made. Moreover, many people still find it convenient to use their own vehicle, as they find it comfortable and convenient. Because they can reach some place where public transport is unavailable. From my point of view, making public transport more reliable and comfortable might be a better solution than making it free of cost.
