Band 6+: Some people think that schools are too competitive and that this has a negative impact on children. Others believe the competitive environment encourages children to achieve. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

In recent days, school education has grown highly demanding. In this context, some individuals believe that it has bad influence on the school students while others argue that it encourages them to accomplish. Reduced confidence and habit of hard work has been argued for and against the higher competition in the schools. It is of my view that competition among the school attenders could help them develop learning and hard-working attitudes.

The key point that can be put in support of competitive schools is that competition boosts the child’s learning behavior. A competitive environment motivates pupils to acquire more knowledge as well as enhance their skills on various activities such as sports, literature and general knowledge which will be important life skills for them. For example: it is often found that children grown in competitive environment are more successful in their life. Likewise, it makes the students hard working. Everyone wants to perform better than others for which they work hard and thus embed the hard-working nature in their personality.

More demanding schools, in other hand, can demotivate students. Introvert children who don’t like to throw themselves in the competition might be left out of the learning process as often teachers tend to attend bright and interactive students. Similarly, students who does perform low despite their best effort may feel low about themselves which will destroy their confidence and affect their mental health as well. For example, students who are often bright in extra-curricular activities but fall behind in academics tend to drop out of school.

In conclusion, people are divided on their opinions about tough competition in the academic institutes. While the competitiveness can enhance the learning and nurture hard working behavior, it can also result in low confidence in children and hamper their mental health. However, I firmly believe that competitiveness within the schools helps student to acquire skills that will help them later in their life, but it is necessary that teachers must always look after students at the bottom of the ranks.
