Band 8+: Some people think that social networking sites have a huge negative impact on both individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a prevalent belief that social networking sites have a significantly adverse impact on individuals and society as a whole. Personally, I strongly support the notion that this phenomenon has more drawbacks than benefits.

Regarding individuals, I contend that social media platforms have a detrimental effect on people due to their negative impact on in-person communication. Nowadays, it is evident that individuals predominantly communicate via text messages on various messaging applications, diminishing the need for face-to-face interactions as seen in the past. Consequently, individuals may experience difficulties in real-life social situations as they lack regular practice in face-to-face communication.

In terms of societal implications, individuals are susceptible to cyberbullying on social media platforms, given that users can maintain multiple identities. It is undeniable that online platforms provide a sense of anonymity, enabling individuals to freely express their thoughts and actions without adhering to any rules or regulations. Unfortunately, some people exploit this anonymity to anonymously harass their victims, leading to long-term negative effects on the mental well-being of the targeted individuals. For instance, there have been cases where individuals have faced severe psychological consequences after being relentlessly targeted by malicious users on platforms like TikTok. In a tragic incident, a Korean celebrity took their own life after enduring prolonged cyberbullying and unwarranted criticism from anonymous individuals.

In conclusion, despite the undeniable convenience and accessibility that social media networks offer, I am steadfast in my belief that the adverse effects they impose on both individuals and society outweigh the advantages.
