Some people think that it is necessary to have stricter punishments for crimes, and it is the best way to tackle crimes. Others argue there are better ways to reduce it. In this essay, I would evaluate both schools of thought before proposing my own perspective on this matter.
On the one hand, proponents of the death penalty argue that stricter punishments act as a deterrent to serious crimes. The fear of execution punishments discourages individuals from engaging in criminal activities, as the consequences can be irreversible. In some countries, the government applies punishments in a strict way, and it was efficient; the rate of crimes was significantly decreased, and everyone in society was safer. As a result, the tougher laws can be sure to reduce the likelihood of criminal behaviour and decrease the rate of crime. Moreover, longer prison sentences keeping dangerous criminals in prisons, preventing them from harming others. Repeat offenders, such as serial burglars or murderers, are able to commit further crimes after being incarcerated. So, this way can bring safety for everyone outside the prison.
On the other hand, individuals claimed that there are some better ways to punish the criminals. i think this is reasonable because if the government invests in education for criminals after they are incarcerated. Providing education and skill training, such as opening a vocational school for them. It can help criminals reintergrate into society, they can earn their money by themself in a legal way. In addition, the government should address the root causes to reduce crime. Poverty, unemployment, and lack of education contribute to criminal behaviour. This problem can be solved by providing job opportunities to reduce the youth crime rate. So, this can tackle the causes of crime, lead to long-term crime reduction.
In conclusion, if we want the crime rate to decrease, we should have some strict punishment; this is inevitable. But in some cases, be sure, we will have some better way that can give the criminal the chance to repair their mistake and have opportunities to return to society, working in an honest and correct way.
