Band 7+: Some people think that teenagers should do some unpaid work in the local community. Some people believe that it benefit both young people and society as a whole. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

It is believed that all youngsters should take up volunteer work in order to benefit their local neighborhood. From my point of view, community services can be significantly beneficial for students; however, their drawbacks should not be overlooked.

On the one hand, volunteering can enable pupil to acquire practical knowledge and contribute to their individual growth. Firstly, it equips them with hands-on experiences, which would be essential in their future careers. For instance, teenagers can work part-time at local shops or community houses. They can find out how these services operate, what tasks are involved, and how to deal with unforeseen difficulties. As such, individuals are taught valuable knowledge while contributing to their neighborhood. Secondly, voluntary works can foster ethical values. To be specific, individuals can feel a sense of fulfillment as they volunteer. In addition, they are exposed to various groups of diverse backgrounds. These processes will stimulate their understanding about others and shape their morality. Resultantly, community services play a crucial role in teenagers’ development.

On the other hand, there are certain demerits to this practice. One notable disadvantage is that pupils may be distracted from their school task. As students spend their pastimes volunteering, homework and class projects are neglected. As a consequence, their academic performances decline in efficiency. Another adverse outcome is that it can be physically and mentally draining. The reason is that sometimes voluntary operation involves heavy workload or long hours. An illustration of this is an activity involving cleaning up the street, which can last several hours. Thus, numerous teenagers face the reality of overwork when they engage in these activities.

In conclusion, despite the drawbacks of volunteer work, students are encouraged to take part in these programs as they foster a beneficial environment for personal growth.
