As roads become increasingly busier and vehicle use escalates across the globe, some people believe that the best way to improve road safety is to have drivers tested each year. However, other people argue that this is neither necessary nor practical. This essay will discuss the reasoning behind each argument, and offer my opinion on the issue.
One reason cited in defence of testing each year is that road rules can, and do, change. By having drivers tested every year, governments and traffic authorities can ensure that those on the road are aware, and are following these changing rules. This ensures widespread education on remaining safe while on the road, as drivers will stay up to date so they can continue driving. Secondly, this is especially important for elderly drivers. As we age, our vision weakens and reflexes slow, and we may become a danger to others on the road. By testing each year, we can be confident older drivers are equally competent and skilled.
However, I believe testing each year is excessive. Most significantly, to do so would incur an expense to drivers every time they are tested. This cost, on top of vehicle registration and maintenance, and petrol and diesel costs, could mean many people suffer financial hardship as a result of annual tests. For many people, a car is their only form of transportation to get to work, and if they cannot afford to undergo a test, they lose their ability to work, and therefore their income. Moreover, undergoing a test involves time and preparation, which many do not have. Testing every five years or so would be more practical.
