It is assumed by a section of society that if the government imposes taxes on unhealthy food, it will lead to the public eating healthy food. Though I believe that it is a way but I also believe the fact that there are far more ways to promote nutritious food. Through this essay I will express my views on this topic.
I firmly believe that fast food is a popular choice among the general public as it is a very economical option. Putting more taxes on these processed food options will increase the prices of these consumables and eventually reduce the purchasing power of people. Gradually, people will discontinue these food choices and opt for healthier options.
Despite this, we also need some other stronger methods as well to encourage wholesome meals. Firstly, we need to raise awareness about the benefits of eating fibrous foods. For instance, the Singapore government started raising awareness camps in school about the negative consequences and since then it has seen a reduction in consumption of sugary food and beverages. In addition to this, the government needs to make sure that fresh produce is more available locally and at affordable prices which will lead to the public switching to a healthy diet efficiently and comfortably.
In a nutshell, imposing taxes on processed food will discourage the people from consuming it but taking other steps like raising awareness and making healthy food available to the public will be the best ways to make people consume nutritious food.
