The trend of forming more international enterprises to achieve the shared objectives is offering countless benefits. While it is widely thought that corporations on such a global scale might optimize the protection of the environment, others argue that economic interests might take precedence. There are arguments on both sides, however, which we will discuss here.
On the one hand, it might be stated that international cooperation can facilitate the process of implementing optimal solutions to severe environmental issues. Given the vesting concern of global-warming, numerous national organizations have launched various projects to mitigate specific problems. However, these initiatives often face many obstacles such as labor shortage or low budget, restricting them to minor tasks like beach cleanups or street litter removal. While these efforts are commendable, their impact on the broader issue of global warming remains minimal. Therefore, international corporations may play a crucial role in assisting these potential organizations in devising more comprehensive strategies for environmental conservation. Take UNEP as a prime example. Through cutting-edge science, this organization helps countries transition to low-carbon and resource-efficient economies.
On the other hand, although global firms may bring several features to environmental conservation, business should be the top priority for such corporations. Business viability is widely considered as the cornerstone of the whole global development. Therefore, international corporations are founded to facilitate businesses’ thriving in this ever-evolving world. Today, there are increasingly more business corporations growing with considerable potential. Despite this positive trend, many corporations still go bankrupt before reaching their peaks due to the financial setbacks, especially during the double-dip recession. In such economic downturns, international conglomerates may be of crucial importance in financially supporting these promising enterprises. For instance, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) is responsible for offering investment, advisory, and asset-management services that possibly foster private-sector development.
Overall, it is true that multinational companies are well-positioned to maximize the effectiveness of environmental conservation initiatives. However, business considerations may turn out to be the foremost priority for these firms which concern mostly on global development.
