While some believe that watching television poses negative consequences for children in every way, others believe it serves as an educational tool for them. In my opinion, television viewing can be beneficial to get knowledge if there is limited use.
On the one hand, watching TV has an adverse impact on children’s physical health, academic performance, and family harmony. Overuse of television causes children to lack time to interact and bond with their families. Furthermore, they can be exposed to toxic, unhealthful content that harms their psychology. As a result, when parents try to control their children’s watching time, conflicts and tension in family relationships can occur. Besides, sitting in front of the TV for hours damages their eyesight and even makes children addicted, leading to insomnia. As a consequence, they have trouble focusing in class and will not be able to perform well in assignments and exams.
On the other hand, television offers a wide range of educational programs that can enhance children’s knowledge. By watching channels dedicated to educational content, children can learn about diverse cultures, scientific concepts, and historical events, fostering their intellectual growth. For instance, Cosmos, which is a renowned educational program, captivates young audiences and exposes them to the wonders of nature and the universe. Besides, TV news such as ABC News, BBC News, and Sydney Morning can help them access information about politics that they cannot learn in school.
In conclusion, I believe that TV is beneficial to expand students’ horizons if used properly and in moderation.
