It is often believed that using corporal punishment with an aim to discipline children is acceptable whereas others argue that it is inadmissible. This essay will examine both perspectives and present my own viewpoint.
On the one hand, using physical punishment can achieve immediate child compliance. This is because this method will cause some degree of pain or discomfort, which will frighten children and remind them not to be disobedient. This means that using physical force with an aim to discipline children can be beneficial in some ways, especially to those who are unruly or rude. This can be exemplified by a research conducted by Ho Chi Minh city university of education, which indicates that more than 70% of children become docile and obedient when facing with corporal punishment.
However, there are numerous drawbacks of using physical force to children. Many experts believe that education is a much better approach than using corporal correction since violence only teaches a child not to engage in an unacceptable behavior in adult’s present. This can lead to young people commit crimes when they are not in the supervision of adults. Additionally, physical discipline also causes stress to children and can lead to long-term issues such as depression and fear.
From my own perspective, I believe that a balance is necessary. Using corporal punishment for serious things like crimes is needed to adjust children’s behavior and therefore it should not be used in any other circumstances.
In conclusion, although using physical force is effective in achieving immediate child compliance, it can teach children to avoid engaging in bad behavior in the present of adults. Personally, I believe that a balance approach is needed in order to educate a child properly.
