There has been a significant divergence of opinion revolving around the role of music, whether that music has a crucial impact. However, opponents consider that it is just one of the forms of amusement. Therefore, I firmly support the previous notion that music affects to daily life. This essay will explain both sides. On the one hand, music became a sort of leisure that promotes temporary distraction. Living in big cities, people often suffer from stress, so music is a great way to drown out problems. For contemporary society, popular music is just a superficial, non-essential form of pleasure that does not have a cultural heritage or deep meaningfulness. And for this reason, the population tend to resort to escapism. For instance, in 2021, Harvard University research showed that 60% of participants use music as a form of emotional escape, which helps to forget difficulties in reality. Consequently, individuals listen to music for recreation.
On the other hand, it is music that can inspire people to preserve cultural heritage. If citizens listen national anthem, it will foster national pride. Another reason is that not only does music expand the national values, but it also conveys emotions and thoughts. Being able to express profound emotions can lead to the unity of people. A good illustration of this will be a well-known tragic story about the Titanic, which happened on 15 April 1921. When the ship collided with an iceberg and started to sink, people were overwhelmed with fear and panic. At this moment, eight musicians began to play classical music, which helped people to be resilient. Hence, this occasion depicts that music has a substantial emotional impact and goes beyond mere entertainment.
To conclude, while the idea that music is a type of pleasure is widespread, from my perspective, it has a significant function. I firmly believe music is a spirituality that may bring people together. As discussed, music is one of the methods to reflect profound thoughts, emotions and prevent national identity. Music is an expression for inarticulate persons.
