It is now increasingly common among school leavers to work or travel before commencing university education. While this development presents some challenges, it also offers several advantages. Alleviate
One of the most notable advantages is that graduates may become more financially independent. By earning money before entering school, students will have an opportunity to cover some of the study-related expenses, such as courses, dormitory costs and basic needs like clothes, food and bills. This reduces their dependence on parents and as a result they experience less financial pressure, which allows them to concentrate and focus fully on studies. For instance, students who worked during gap year do not have to do a part-time job, allowing them to visit all classes and focus on assignments. In addition, travelling requires a range of skills, such as being organized and staying consistent. This can alleviate the studying process, as students will already know how to appropriately organize their schedule and plan their routine.
Nevertheless, the trend is not without its drawbacks. A primary concern is that those who get a gap year will get detached from academic life. If school leavers get used to visiting countries or working, they may get disconnected from studies or even forget some of the study materials, which will significantly complicate the studying process. As a result, they will get bored and distracted from the lectures and end up with poor academic performance and low grades. Studies show that students who took a gap year usually experience a decline in motivation to study and show worse results.
In conclusion, although an academic hiatus may complicate the process of returning back to academic life and loose of motivation, it offers an unforgettable experience and financial stability.
