Band 7+: Some think academic grades motivate students to learn, while others believe they cause stress and competition. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Academic grades are often seen as a way to encourage students to work hard and learn more. When students know their efforts will be rewarded with good marks, they often feel more motivated to study, pay attention in class, and finish their assignments on time. Grades also help students understand how well they’re doing in a subject and show them where they need to improve. In this way, learning can feel like a meaningful challenge, encouraging students to put in their best effort.

However, grades can also bring problems like stress and unhealthy competition. Many students feel a lot of pressure to get high marks, which can lead to anxiety and make school feel overwhelming. Some end up focusing only on chasing good grades instead of truly understanding what they’re learning. On top of that, some students lose their love for learning because their parents push them too hard to succeed. While students who want a career in education often enjoy studying and stay motivated, many others see studying as a heavy task and struggle to stay interested.

In my view, even though grades can provide some motivation and useful feedback, the harmful effects like stress and constant competition often outweigh the benefits. When students care only about marks, they miss out on the real joy of learning and the personal growth that comes with it. It’s much better for students to stay curious and build a deep understanding of what they’re studying, rather than just memorizing facts to pass exams. Real learning happens when students enjoy what they’re studying and want to learn, not just when they’re focused on scoring high.

That’s why I believe that while some kind of assessment is needed, schools should stop relying on grades as the main way to push students. Instead, they should create a learning environment where students feel free to explore, ask questions, and learn from their mistakes without feeling constant pressure. Parents also need to support their children and remember that grades do not define a student’s worth. We shouldn’t judge students only by their marks, because every student has their own unique strengths. With this approach, learning can become more meaningful and enjoyable, and students will likely feel less stressed.
