Band 7+: Some think that all entertaining TV programmes should educate people about the importance of social issues. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Opinions are divided on whether people ought to be educated about the importance of social issues through watching entertaining programmes on television. Personally, I wholeheartedly agree with this idea since I believe that such action can well keep people up to date with the latest information through their activities on a daily basis.

Granted, one might argue that people often feel exhausted after a hard working day. At that time, they may find it hard to get access to new information, and watching a truly intriguing show is one of the best ways for them to unwind. This, as a result, makes it unnecessary to insert social problems into TV shows. However, nowadays, thanks to advanced technology, producers are still able to skillfully make programs that carry meaningful value inside. Not only can people enjoy the shows, but they also have chances to gain insight into what is happening in their daily lives.

In my opinion, taking advantage of television programmes as a tool to educate citizens about social issues is beneficial in many ways. It is obvious that entertaining TV programs have a broad audience at different age levels, making them an effective medium to reach a large number of people simultaneously. In addition, by incorporating elements of entertainment such as humor, storytelling, engaging formats, etc., these programmes can easily appeal to even those who are not interested in educational content. The prime example of this is that nowadays, instead of watching boring daily news, many teenagers usually lean towards seeing a fun sitcom or cartoon. Therefore, if societal problems appear in these programmes, they can know more about them.

In conclusion, I strongly support the idea that governments can raise people’s awareness of social problems through enjoyable TV programmes, since they can understand more about the latest troubles in society without feeling dull.
