Education system has changed significantly over the years with an increased competition among students, sparking a debate on whether too much testing is destroying creativity. I disagree with this notion as there are important aspects of testing. The following essay shall elucidate my stance.
Firstly, standardized testing instills discipline among students. Pupils practice questions and submit assignments for upcoming exams which create a schedule and instill discipline. Furthermore, examinations in education system prepare students for competitive exams which are often a gateway to prestigious universities. For example, Adesh, a high school student, said that since his institution conducted periodic tests, it helped him to be well prepared for the admission test for his dream university.
Additionally, tests instill a sense of competition among peers, invoking productivity and higher levels of skills, which are often required later in life. It is due to regular examinations that students prepare their curriculum and try to attain higher scores than their peers. This inturn elevates their academic capabilities. As an instance, Mark, a high school student, said that he would always try to score higher than his other classmates in his annual examinations. This led to him improving his skills at mathematics and ultimately helped him to secure an admission for a Phd in Mathematics at a prestigious university. Although some academicians have argued that rigorous exams inhibit students from exploring their creative sides, high cut-offs in entrance exams leave little room for students to explore other aspects and they focus on what is ultimately important for their future.
In conclusion, standardized tests in an academic environment are necessary. In my opinion, I believe it is important for students to be focused on exams and too much exams do not destroy creativity but improve their skills.
