Band 6+: Students should be primarily taught academic subjects so that they can pass exams, and practical skills such as cooking should not be taught. ( dressing/ music/ instrumental music/ sports/ finance/ car maintenance….) To what extent do you agree or disagree?,

Some people say that academic subjects should be focused on only at school to help students pass exams, while practical skills such as cooking are unnecessary . From my viewpoint, I totally disagree with this opinion. I believe that schools should teach both academic subjects and practical skills for students because they help students live independently and support those who are not strong in academic learning.

First of all, practical skills are essential for students to live more independently. Practical skills are applied in daily life, helping people survive independently without relying on others. In emergencies, practical skills also allow them to overcome difficulties more easily. For instance, after graduating high school, many students leave home to pursue further education. At this stage, practical skills like cooking and financial management become indispensable for maintaining their daily lives independently or living with new roommates, especially without the direct care of their families.

Moreover, practical skills can help some students turn their dreams into reality by allowing them to follow career paths that do not require high education qualifications. Some students may not be good at studying academic subjects in school, like maths or science but they often excel in hand-on areas such as cooking, sewing, or music. These students deserve to develop their strengths and have equal opportunities for success. In fact, there are many jobs that do not require advanced academic qualifications but rather empathize hands-on experience and practical expertise, such as being a chef or a mechanic. If schools ignore practical education, they may limit students’ career choices and personal growth.

In conclusion, I believe that education should not only focus on academic subjects. The integration of practical skills are equally crucial, these competencies not only facilitate students independence but also broaden more future career choices for them.
