Band 7+: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage about voting systems.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The article and the lecture are both about the possiblity of human society on the moon. The article gives reasons as to why movving to the moon would be difficult, while the lecturer counters all the writer’s arguments: suggesting solutions to each of the issues.

Firstly, the author casts worry upon the weakness of the moon’s atmosphere, meaning people will be harmed by radiation and meteor impacts. In addition, the author claims it would take extremely long to develop the technology necessary to solve the problem. The lecturer counters the argument. He shines light on the fact that this problem can be easily fixed by low tech solutions to save moon inhabitants. For Example, lunar soil is useful to protect people from radiation, and ground infrastructure to stabilize them during meteor impacts. Here, the professor develops a counterargument to the writers first point by giving a simple fix to the apparently “hard-to-develop” technology.

Secondly, the writer doubts the availability of resources on the moon currently by saying that the only solution to the lack of breathable air and soil is very expensive and challenging: transferring big amounts of soil from earth to the moon. Not many countries would do that effort, because all those trips back and forth are very expensive with no guarantee of success after all. However, the speaker points to the fact that there are huge amounts of water on the moon’s polar areas. The water can result in the production of breathable air, fuel, and food without soil by the help of hydroponics.

Finally, the article ultimately argues that establishing a lunar colony could lead to psychological issues due to the constant isolation on the moon and the lack of access to diverse landscapes and artistic experiences, which could affect settlers’ mental health. In contrast, the lecturer suggests that this issue could be addressed through regular communication with Earth and the use of virtual reality technology. Additionally, habitats could be designed with open spaces and natural light, and Earth-like environments could be recreated on the moon to help alleviate psychological stress.

In conclusion, Inhabiting the moon is possible for humankind. As the lecturer proved, all the worries about moon-urbanization are easily fixable.
