Advances in technology have revolutionized the way we engage in different activities. It is reported that visual content, such as films and games, can be accessed at any time thanks to communication devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. While I believe this phenomenon has undeniable positive sides, underlying side effects take dominance over its positive sides.
The major advantage is that having access to movies and games eliminates geographical barriers and financial burdens. Gone are the days when people used to commute to theatres and computer clubs to entertain and socialize with one another. Unlike the past, broadcasting and game-selling platforms, such as Netflix and Xbox Game Pass, have been offering unprecedented opportunities of purchasing films and play without the necessity to commute. In effect, this can avert financial burdens posed by commuting and service fees, while letting people go over geographical limitations. Friends who live far from one another can connect effortlessly with the advent of online games or broadcasting platforms.
However, this comes at the expense of one’s health. On the face of it, having such an opportunity seems miraculous; yet, real outcomes are a far cry from sugar-coated promises. Were it not possible, people would have commuted on foot or by car, contributing to their health; but, hardly ever might individuals act physically because of instant access to films and games, an initial phase of a sedentary lifestyle. This, in turn, triggers obesity, resulting in mounted medical expenses in the end. Not only does this cause obesity, but due to the fact that films and games are ‘traps’ of top-grossing companies, they are of addictive nature. The more time one spends in front of such products designed to maximize profits irrespective of the user’s well-being, the more organizations, who are indifferent toward their users and clients, make profits. Appealing designs are techniques used by companies. For example, people, mostly children, are prone to deny going outside and engage in collaborative activities with their peers, given that they have access to their favourite movies and games through their computers, states a BBC-conducted survey.
In conclusion, although benefits–the elimination of geographical and financial limitations–are crystal-clear, drawbacks outweigh its benefits due to the rise in inactivity, health complications, and increased manipulation of profit-driven companies.
