Nowadays, it is commonly argued that reducing air pollution is only the government’s responsibility. This essay completely disagrees with that statement. I strongly believe that although the government can slow down this environmental issue, every individual should try to pollute less in order to be more efficient.
While some believe that only governments can effectively reduce air pollution and improve air quality, I disagree with this view. Although governments can introduce laws or promote renewable energy, these measures alone are not enough if many people do not cooperate. For instance, even with strict restrictions, pollution levels will remain significantly high if individuals continue to waste a lot of energy at home or to rely heavily on private cars instead of using public transport.
Additionally, everyone can contribute remarkably by making small but impactful changes in their everyday lives. It is true that if everybody was using public transport or trying to reduce their energy consumption, the pollution level would decrease. To illustrate this, in New Caledonia, for many years the government did not pay attention to environmental issues. As a consequence, the citizens had to take important decisions in order to reduce air pollution. Many private transport companies have been created to replace the transport provided by the government.
In conclusion, while it may be argued that governments play a key role, I firmly believe that individuals also have a responsibility to take action. Without their efforts, government policies may not be effective, making collective actions essential for cleaner air.
