In today’s digital era, smartphones and handheld devices are making video games and portable entertainment accessible to everyone. While some people argue that these games are a form of modern relaxation, I believe it is harmful to individuals and society, and that excessive gaming brings clear negative consequences, such as becoming less active and underperforming in studies or/and at work.
It is often argued that modern entertainment is not entirely destructive and can offer real value when managed properly. Many modern mobile games require teamwork, quick problem-solving, and cognitive thinking, which help stimulate the brain. Furthermore, short gaming sessions provide a simple way to manage stress after a long day of hard work. It is through sensible time management and self-control that individuals can enjoy these digital games safely. For instance, a busy office worker who plays a relaxing puzzle game for twenty minutes on the bus ride to home can effectively clear their mind without neglecting their responsibilities or family time in the evening.
However, handheld video games can cause serious problems for adolescents and local communities. With digital distractions constantly placed in the hands of young people, concentration levels in schools and workplaces have significantly dropped. Not only do these games waste time, but they also lead to physical health issues like poor posture and eye strain. Take an average high school student, for example; they stay up until 3 AM playing video games on their phone and will most likely feel exhausted the next morning, resulting in lower grades and a lack of energy for real-life friendships or teamwork. Consequently, society suffers because people become more isolated, less active, and less engaged in community life.
In conclusion, although handheld games are not inherently harmful, they can easily lead to addiction and social isolation if people spend too much time on them. If users learn to balance their daily schedules, video games can remain a safe and fun form of modern relaxation.
