It is said, that the greatest way to increase road safety is to obligate car drivers for an annual driving test. I find this conception to be completely wrong.
To begin with, making vehicle drivers retake their driving test every year to check their skills is ineffective, as a short-period test is incapable of showing a person’s actual quality of driving. It can be evaluated only during a brief, controlled time, not preventing or predicting reckless, uncontrolled behaviors on a road in the future. Plenty of car accidents happened when the drivers were under alcohol or pills, which led to having an affected, unclear mind and uncontrollable attitude while driving.
Secondly, making citizens retake their driving test annually would impose a heavy financial burden or everyday commuters. If the government covers it, it drains vital public funds. However, I believe that this particular approach could be modified into a better alternative. For example, road safety could be enhanced by analyzing and checking driver’s medical condition. It is rather more convenient to check elderly, or high-risk groups (such drivers as who were noticed in road violations on several occasions) every year than obligating all human groups to do so. It would be helpful in diminishing those who have reduced their skills over the years.
In conclusion, I fully disagree with the statement that the annual driving test is required to be done in order to increase road safety. Not only is it impractical and but it is also damaging to drivers.
