Band 8+: The best way to solve the world’s environmental problem is to increase the price of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the contemporary era, environmental issues have become a pressing concern. Some individuals argue that raising the price of fuels is the most effective solution to address these problems. While it is undeniable that this approach offers certain benefits, I opine that there are more efficacious methods to comprehensively enhance the ecological system.

It is comprehensible why some support the notion that environmental problems can be mitigated by increasing the cost of fuels. The primary rationale behind this argument is that higher fuel prices would lead to a reduction in the volume of commuting, subsequently resulting in a significant decrease in harmful emissions from private vehicles. For example, in Ho Chi Minh city, there is a growing tendency among people residing in suburban areas to utilize public transportation for their daily commute. This not only helps individuals reduce their travel expenses but also alleviates traffic congestion in the city.

Nevertheless, this perspective overlooks the fact that transportation accounts for only about one-quarter of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from energy. The largest contributors to global emissions are electricity and heat, followed by agriculture, manufacturing, and construction. Additionally, increasing the cost of fuel can escalate logistic expenses, ultimately leading to indiscriminate price hikes for other products.

In my view, there are more immersive and direct approaches to solving environmental issues. One such approach is the use of clean energy sources. Promoting the utilization of renewable resources such as wind, nuclear, and solar power can substantially mitigate pollution. These energy sources are less finite and pollution-free, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of individuals. For instance, in Ninh Thuan province, the emphasis on wind farms and solar panels is gaining traction, making renewable energy more accessible to the general populace. This approach reduces dependence on fossil fuels without unfairly burdening those who are less affluent.

In conclusion, while increasing the cost of fuels can mitigate environmental issues to some extent, it is by no means the ultimate solution. Embracing clean energy sources and promoting renewable energy can offer a more sustainable and equitable approach to addressing the challenges posed by environmental degradation.
