Nowadays criminal cases are becoming more and more widespread and getting a lot of people involved, from young to old. Some criminology experts allege that most often in urban areas the crime rate is higher than that of in the countryside. One of the reasons of this trend can be better access to resources, and one of the ways to decrease the crime rate is improving urban planning.
The main cause of why crime rate is more prevalent in cities and towns than that of in suburbs is availability of resources which lead to better opportunities for committing crime. Urban areas have more valuable resources and goods, making them more attractive for criminals. This trend is rooted in the fact that large cities typically have a higher concentration of business, corporations and people who possess expensive items. As an example, cars, money or brand clothes which can be stolen or resold at the higher price in the blackmarket. Moreover, urban areas have more crowded public spaces and active nightlife, which provide opportunities for theft, assault or even drug dealing.
One of the most relevant ways to solve the mentioned problem is effective urban planning. By designing spaces with better lighting, surveillance and open spaces we can create a more safe environment for living. Natural surveillance is the best strategy which is to design public spaces with maximum visibility. For example, the strategic placement of the windows in the building and well-lit streets. One more way which can contribute to crime reduction is police engagement. We should foster a strong relationship between police and society, and increase police presence in areas and events with high crime risk to deter criminal activities.
In conclusion, the trend of higher crime rate in urban areas stems from several factors which are the availability of opportunities for crime activities and active society life. There are two main ways of how we can reduce the crime rate. These are perfecting cities planning and active police participation.
