People think that nowadays as technology is improving, crime rate is decreasing due to more advanced tools that can help prevent and solve crimes. It is a belief that criminalists adapt to this new technology and use it in their favor, but my opinion is that the increase of cameras in a lot of places, the advanced DNA exams and the new tools that help looking for the identity of people are helping reduce crime activities.
Compared to the past, nowadays there is more security thanks to the amount of cameras distributed all over the cities, even in many houses and private buildings. Around 60% of buildings have their own security camera, which helps identify when someone is acting suspicious or already committing a crime. In addition to this, some cameras include face recognition, so it’s easy to identify suspects.
In crime scenes, advanced technology lets the police identify suspects using DNA samples found in the scene. By examining something as simple as a hair or a blood stain, individuals involved in a crime may be identified. Lately, people are taking DNA tests to find out about their origins. These tests have enabled authorities to capture criminals by matching DNA results with criminals people are related to.
The invention of new tools in this field are allowing a fast and easy recognition of criminals, by just using their fingerprints. Police have access to a registry of everyone’s biometrics which makes it easy to identify any suspect or victim, all they have to do is find them. This isn’t difficult because fingerprints are left everywhere whether it is or not a crime scene.
Overall, technology proves that taking advantage of the tools at hand, makes it easier for crime investigators to prevent and solve crimes that without advanced technology wouldn’t have been efficient. The use of security cameras, precise DNA exams and biometrics is a key in today’s crime investigation techniques.
