The expansion of tourism is causing English to become the most wide-spread language all around the world. Some people predict that one day it will become the only language spoken globally. This essay will examine the advantages and disadvantages and provide a logical conclusion
On one hand, one shared language can have a number of benefits for people and be useful for many political reasons. Firstly, single global language gives people all around the world one more common thing. Similarities between them encourage people to communicate, allow them to exchange thoughts and give them opportunities to understand several points of view which will unify them and let them bond. Moreover, it would be beneficial for global communication between countries and prevent misunderstandings. Public meetings would no longer need translations. Countries that have several state languages would no longer face hardship during governmental administrations. Thirdly, academical advantages would be considerable. Books wouldn’t need translation, lectures would be understandable for everyone, students wouldn’t have to learn a foreign language on top of their majors to be able to study abroad and language gap between learners would disappear.
On the other hand, everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Only having one language option will cause loss in cultural diversity. Some cultures base traditions heavily on their language origination. Because sometimes curiosity of a language encourages people to learn about the nation that used it. Likewise, all the languages except one disappearing overtime means some words that don’t exist in English to disappear too. For example, French language has the word “brimborion” that means an object that has no value or job and is kept for sentimental reasons. Furthermore, single language choice would be great only for adaptable people. Some may not be able to adapt, leading to them being singled out. Consequently, this act would create disadvantage in sociality. However, if used in a proper way, this approach would do more good than bad.
In conclusion, although one unified language may cause certain disadvantages like loss of diversity and unique words, it has an extremely good impact on communication and academic purposes.
