The expansion of global tourism has played a major role in making English the dominant international language. Some individuals argue that this trend will result in English becoming the sole language used worldwide. Although this approach will make worldwide communication easier and will improve global cooperation, it has considerable drawbacks that need to be acknowledged.
One obvious advantage of speaking a single global language is that it makes communication easier as it removes language barriers, making International travel, business, and education much simpler. As a result, people could collaborate without any misunderstandings. Thus, a common language could also enhance diplomacy and international problem-solving. Authorities would be able to coordinate more efficiently, without spending time on overcoming language barriers, and focusing more on international issues, such as global warming and public health.
Nevertheless, the disadvantages that come with speaking one language, should not be neglected. The main concern is that nations would lose their cultural identity since language not only separates them from the other “mass” but also shows the whole path of history that they have passed. This will bring a vague historical context in the future since all languages have their development stages, which correspond to each era of human history. By analyzing the text linguists may identify to which epoch it belongs to each country, so they would not be able to do it anymore. Another significant demerit, it will contribute to the extinction of minority languages. For example, there are many nations under the reign of the Russian Federation that have to speak in Russian in order to fulfill their daily commitments, such as going to school, work, etc. So the younger generations prefer speaking in Russian in general and are more likely to forget about their origins completely after a few decades.
In conclusion, even though a common global language may offer the removal of barriers and increased efficiency of international coordination, our major part of individual and cultural identity will be obscured and some of them will be fully erased.
