Latest improvements in tourism led to English becoming the most prevalent language globally. Some believe this situation will culminate in English being the sole spoken language in the future. Although, for humanity, there are some advantages of using one common language all around the world in terms of understanding and acknowledging each other well, in my opinion, the disadvantages far outweigh the former as regards the diminishment of linguistic heritage and cultural diversity.
On a positive approach, if all people could speak English in daily conversations, the quality of communication between us would have increased considerably. Especially, regarding touristic trips and diplomatic gatherings, people could understand each other and cater to their needs more easily as there is no language barrier for them to express themselves. For instance, even if you visit a tribe in Africa, you can interact with indigenous people and acknowledge their personality, how they live, what they like etc. However, for me, you can also do the same thing with the help of translators or online sources.
On the flip side, speaking English worldwide hinders cultural diversity and damages linguistic heritage which has a crucial value for humanity. To be more clear, when people start to communicate in a single language, other languages will be forgotten day by day and after some generations, they will become extinct. Besides, the cultural assimilation that stems from the less usage of substantive parlance will come to the surface. Think about a Korean speaking English all the time… There would be no difference between a British and this will cause a monotony.
In conclusion, even if some people believe that having a common language around the world is a good thing in terms of better connections, I certainly support the idea that the disadvantages would be catastrophic for the future of humanity as regards cultural and linguistic degeneration.
