The free movement of goods across national borders permits industries to send and receive freight from and to other states, without paying customs duties and avoiding restrictions. Many discussions are ongoing on this argument. Some claim it is crucial for economic growth, while others argue it damages local economies. In this essay, I am going to analyze both the thesis and also, I am going to give my opinion about it.
The free movement of goods has been in force since 1968 in the EU. This decision has brought many advantages to the economy of the EU. In fact, with the increase in the movement of goods within the Union, the state’s members have increased their GDP. Therefore, we can affirm that the free movement of goods played a crucial role in the wealth growth of the European Union. Those who support this thesis see the free movement of goods as the fulcrum for the economic growth of the Union.
However, not everyone is in favour of this topic. Many local businesses have gone bankrupt due to the high competition of foreign big firms. Clients usually prefer to purchase the cheapest option, but local businesses often cannot compete with the prices of big companies. This is one of the main points supporting the thesis against the free movement of goods across national borders.
In conclusion, I am not against the free movement of goods indeed. I think it is one of the most important factors for the growth and wellness of a country. However, it is established that economic’s giants have more economic power compared to small local industries. This is why I believe locals business should be more protected and helped by the governments to be more competitive.
