There is a common assumption that governments should allocate more funding to science subjects than other subjects for the nation’s sustainable development. While I partly agree with this view, I still believe that there are various aspects of society depending on different academic disciplines.
On the one hand, there is no doubt about the essential role of science education in a nation’s long-term technological and economic growth. Prioritizing science subjects such as math, physics, chemistry and biology helps produce highly skilled professionals, including doctors, engineers, scientists and researchers. Especially in today’s technology-driven world, nations that possess core technologies are less dependent on foreign innovation. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, countries with a strong scientific research system were able to produce vaccines and medical equipment faster. Therefore, investing in science education may enhance a nation’s competitiveness in the global market and raise people’s standard of living.
On the other hand, concentrating funding solely on science while ignoring other subjects may be harmful. A well-functioning nation also needs competent government officials, teachers, lawyers, historians and business specialists. Non-science subjects, including literature, help individuals develop their communication skills, critical thinking, leadership qualities and cultural identity. In addition, art and music play important roles in improving people’s creativity, enriching the national heritage, residents’ well-being and mental health. If the state only gives financial support for science subjects, education systems will become unbalanced and students may lack life skills. Sustainable development can only be achieved when different fields grow together.
In conclusion, although science is very essential for national development and innovation, I still believe financial support should be equally distributed between science and other subjects. This is because non-science disciplines contribute significantly to cultural development and social stability.
