It is believed that talks by ex-prisoners at school is the most viable measure to educate students about the dangers of crime. Although such methods might be beneficial in a few aspects, I believe that there are more compelling ways to teach students about crime.
There are a few reasons why allowing reformed criminals to talk about offenses is an effective way to educate students . One main reason is that students can develop academically from those who are truly into criminology . This is because by participating in talks about crime, students could gather a plethora of information about this field, which is clearer to understand compared to dynamic videos, therefore broadening one’s knowledge in the field of crime . In addition to this, students also raise their awareness about the consequences of crime, especially for those who have the intention of committing crime. For example, over-indulgent teenagers might be the hazards and partake in illegal activities. If those students were informed about the consequences of crime such as life imprisonment or execution, they will not commit crime anymore.
However, it seems to me that there are more reasonable grounds why there are more effective ways to educate students about crime . Firstly, criminology should be introduced as a subject at school. By doing this, school authorities not only improve students’ knowledge about crime but also raise their awareness about the effects of crime to victims. Secondly, students should have some extracurricular trip to young offender institution . For instance, National economic university, a top – tier institution in VietNam, operated a trip to LaTrosbe – a rehabilitation center in Hoa Binh. After the trip, many students claimed that they feel more sympathy with the victims and they also understood the devastated effects of crime on people life, thus running a campaign to prevent teenagers crime.
In conclusion, while there might be some certain reasons why talks by ex-prisoners should be held for educational purposes, there is stronger evidence that there are more effective ways to educate students about the drastic consequences of crime.
