Band 8+: The international community must act immediately to ensure all nations reduce the consumption of fossil fuel (gas and oil). To what extent do you agree or disagree.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is widely argued that the international community should take immediate action to reduce fossil fuel consumption. While I agree that urgent global action is necessary to deal with climate change, I do not believe every country should be expected to reduce fossil fuel use at the same pace because nations differ in economic development and energy needs.

On one hand, immediate international action is essential because fossil fuels are the primary driver of climate change. Burning coal, oil, and natural gas releases enormous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, accelerating global warming and contributing to increasingly severe weather events. As a result, countries around the world are facing rising sea levels, floods, wildfires, and prolonged heatwaves, all of which threaten ecosystems and human lives. For example, emissions generated in one country can contribute to environmental damage far beyond its borders, making climate change a truly global challenge. Therefore, only coordinated international efforts can effectively curb emissions, protect ecosystems and safeguard future generations.

However, requiring every country to cut fossil fuel consumption immediately would be unfair and impractical. Many developing countries still depend heavily on coal, oil, and gas to generate electricity, support industrialisation and maintain economic growth. If one nation suddenly reduces use of fossil fuel, it will disrupt energy supplies and hinder poverty reduction. For instance, many low-income countries in Africa continue to rely on fossil fuels because renewable energy infrastructure remains too expensive and technologically inaccessible. Rather than imposing expectations on all nations, developed countries should reduce fossil fuel use gradually according to their economic circumstances.

In conclusion, I agree that countries should take action to reduce their use of fossil fuels because climate change is a serious global problem. However, each country should be allowed to reduce its use at a pace that suits its economic development and energy needs.
