Due to the prevalence of technological devices and the internet, acquiring knowledge in different realms has now become much easier to access and also, most of the information online is free of charge. Although this development has overall positive aspects, the drawbacks it presents should be taken into account. In this essay, I will make an effort to address both benefits and threats related to this trend.
The internet has a number of strengths. To start, one prominent advantage is that it makes the learning process much more attainable. What I mean by this is that people can easily get access to any information at the click of a button without either going to a library or attending lectures physically. Not only does it lead to saving extra time for a person, but it also sustains a wide range of updated and relevant topics as opposed to libraries, which may not always have the latest findings available on hand. Moreover, the internet enables individuals to gain a university degree from anywhere in the world, which to some extent is much less stressful especially for those from developing countries. Thus, they do not have to get too concerned about covering their basic necessities, such as paying for accommodation and meals, as they will be studying online from home.
Despite these significant advantages, the internet is far from perfect. First of all, the information available on the internet may not always be credible. In most cases, people often fall blindly for everything they read online without realizing the need to filter it out. This can lead to false misconceptions when it comes to absorbing knowledge and conveying it to others. Furthermore, it deteriorates their critical thinking skills. Individuals often lose the sense of rumination over a specific topic on their own as it is easier to google and get the answer down quickly without giving much elaboration and this very thing will eventually ruin their ability to think thoroughly.
In conclusion, the internet is an enormous advantage for those who are willing to obtain knowledge because it leads to easy access to information and getting a university degree. Although the credibility of information on the internet needs a double-check and it also affects critical thinking, I still believe that the advantages of this trend are far greater than the disadvantages.
