In this day and age, with the proliferation of information technology, public libraries have recognised significant transformations. While it is reckoned that cutting-edge media such as computer software, video and DVDs has brought about various influences, it seems to me that the advantageous impacts would overshadow its disadvantages.
With the aid of advances in technological appliances, several drawbacks can be witnessed. The first disadvantage of the state of the art media is that having up-to-date devices set up, updated and maintained requires an immense amount of money, which can put pressure on either local or national budgets. Secondly, using such kinds of electronic gadgets could also detrimentally affect human’s health. To be more specific, successive exposure to blue light from digital devices can pose eyestrain, fatigue or sometimes headache and even sleep deprivation. Additionally, to children, instead of reading printed books, they probably have a tendency to embrace digital content, which opens them up to uncensored sites, leading to some underlying consequences.
Considering the merits of electronic resources, those devices offer consumers dozens of conveniences. First and foremost, e-books can contain multimedia elements that are not available with conventional books, which comprehend a great combination of images and sounds, making the reading experience more engaging and rewarding. A case in point that teenagers nowadays tend to listen to the summary of a book converted to the form of a video rather than reading full text, which can make information much easier to be absorbed. Moreover, it also enables people to gain access to any information quickly rather than accumulating knowledge by reading physical documents. Last but not least, virtual library seem to be cost-effective owing to not comprising paper books. In other words, no trees are required to manufacture paper for pages of books, therefore using digital devices can be eco-friendly.
In conclusion, while there is no room for doubt that hi-tech media has its own negative effects on our life, from my perspective, much more benefits of e-books can be identified.
