Band 7+: The media should include more stories which report good news. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, there is a growing debate about whether the media should include more stories that report good news, which has sparked widespread concern and discussion across the globe. Many people argue that the media should report good news, while others believe that it should report all news, whether good or bad. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting a personal viewpoint. While both sides have valid arguments, I firmly believe that the media should report both.

It is understandable why some people might support the idea that the media should report good news. They often argue that it can promote social balance. For example, in some countries, those with more positive news are more socially balanced than those where bad news circulates. This viewpoint is certainly not without merit, as it highlights the significance of positive social news in maintaining social stability.

However, I strongly believe that the media should cover bad news. One compelling reason is that negative news, to a certain extent, makes citizens better aware of the actual situation of their country. To illustrate this, in those countries that report negative national news, citizens are more active in national affairs, which is beneficial to the development of the country. Therefore, while the opposing argument has some value, it fails to consider the importance of negative social news in maintaining social stability.

To sum up, although there are convincing arguments on both sides, I firmly maintain that negative news plays an important role in social stability. It is clear that social stability can only be maintained when both positive and negative news exist at the same time. Therefore, the media should report both sides of the news.
