Nowadays, the quantity of prisoners is increasing annually. Certain people assume that prisons are the best method to deal with crime, while others think that community service is more effective. I believe that prisons are better; but nevertheless, both views will be discussed below.
In fact, prisons can be considered as a severe punishment, which directly makes inmates suffer mentally and often physically. Moreover, law offenders lose the most precious assets as time and freedom. Therefore, it is commonly believed that criminals after releasing will fear to commit crime because of understanding that they can return to sell. I agree that prisons instilling fear indeed tackle crime. For instance, Scandinavian states have a strict imprisonment, consequently leading to the lowest crime rate globally.
However, community service also reeducates criminals, where they learn to value others property and hard work thereafter, culprits become a law-abiding eventually. However, I disagree with this point. Because such approach is merely an insufficient measure. Because after community service law breakers feel free to return to criminal path. For example, Great Britain with 78 percent of juvenile offenders who were sent to community service in the end became recidivists. This example proves that public service is quite insufficient.
To conclude, prisons as an institution positively impact criminal’s decision in order not to commit a crime, comparatively community service offers only a short-term effect. I presume that prisons are a better way to tackle crime because it is a harsh lesson to make them fear committing crime again.
