Band 7+: The percentage of overweight children in Western countries has increased by almost 20% in last ten years. Discuss the disturbing causes and effects of this trend.

The level of obesity among the younger population has increased significantly in the past decade. This essay will first suggest that the main causes of this trend are the popularization of fast food and lack of physical activity, and it will then state that it leads to health problems and underdevelopment of children and teenagers.

The development of this concerning trend started with the introduction of numerous fast food chains throughout the world. These diners offer food with few nutrients but contain excessive calories that result in a calorie surplus – the main reason for weight gain. Instead of cooking, parents prefer to go to the nearest fast food outlet and buy a meal at a low price. Another cause of the increase in overweight children is a lack of physical exercise. Kids, who used to play outside, build muscles, and burn calories, now tend to spend their time at home playing video games or watching videos on social media.

The consequences of childhood obesity extend beyond mere weight gain. The main effect is health problems that they will carry throughout their whole lives. Overweight children are at a higher risk of developing chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or heart conditions, since they do not get enough nutrients to strengthen their autoimmune systems. Addictions to fast food might be developed due to palm oil, which is often described as a food drug. Moreover, obesity can hinder the physical development of children and teenagers. Excess weight, put on a growing body, affects bone health and leads to joint problems. It also impedes children from participating in other activities and sports, stopping the development of necessary muscles and bone structures.

In conclusion, the rise in children’s obesity problems can be attributed to the popularization of the fast food industry and a significant decline in physical activity levels among young people. The consequences of this trend result in health problems and the overall underdevelopment of children and teenagers.
