Band 5+: The percentage of overweight children in western society has noticeably increased in the last ten years. Discuss the cause and effect of this disturbing trend

It is observed that the proportion of obese children in western society has escalated by almost 20% in the last decade. There are myriad aspects behind this situation, and there are some influences of this. Both reasons as well as impacts will be elaborated in the ensuing write-up.

Among many reasons, the first one is easy availability of fast foods. To explain it, there are many fast foods like pizza, burgers, etc. which are easily available in the market and are very delicious. Because of this, children are attracted towards this food. Also, the guardian of the children has a busy schedule, because of this they cannot prepare food for their children, and due to this youngsters can have a reason to consume fast food. Besides this, the lack of physical activities among children. In other words, children nowadays are busy, due to their school tuition as well as academic work, because of this they cannot do physical activities, and in their leisure period they use to play mobile phones, watch movies, instead of playing outdoor games.

Focussing on the impacts, the most destructive one is their adverse effect on their physical as well as mental health. To elaborate, as children momentarily consume excessive amount of fast food with high calories and cholesterol promotes high blood pressure and breathing problems like asthma. Also,due to

their overweight, they cannot even walk properly. Their bone strength can get reduced if the consumption of fast food or sugary food continues. There is a chance of diabetes. Not only overeating but also, less physical activities promotes promotes obesity in youngsters.

In conclusion, the rise in proportion of obese children in western society is due to poor diet habits and lack of physical activities, which leads to physical and mental health issues.
