Overall, all four Southeast Asian countries are experiencing an increase in the percentage of people living in the cities since 1970 and are predicted to keep growing until 2040.
At the beginning of 1970, only 10% of the Indonesian population lived in the city. The percentage of people that live in the city in Thailand was slightly higher, which is almost one fifth of the total population. The highest percentage of city people in that year were in the Philippines and Malaysia at about 30% of the country’s population.
Percentage of people living in cities became higher until 1990 for all four Asian countries. However since then, almost half of the population in the Philippines that lived in the city dropped by approximately 7% for the next 2 decades while the remaining 3 countries on the graph still increased slowly.
In the future, it is predicted that more people will move to the city. In 2024, approximately four fifths of the Malaysian population are predicted to live in the city, which will become the highest country with the city people population percentage. Followed by Indonesia with almost three fifth of the population living in the city. And lastly, in 2024 it is predicted that almost half of the population of the Philippines and Thailand will live in the city.
