It is a fact that increasing individuals provide their secret database online through large online communities and organizations. Although this trend offers enhanced user experience, I strongly believe that it has negative effects, particularly as individuals are likely to be vulnerable to cyber-crimes and violations of privacy. Both perspectives will be explored in this essay.
On the one hand, the collection of personal information by large Internet corporations presents several advantages. Firstly, facilitating online updates of personal information enhances users’ security. This is primarily because it ensures that companies have accurate and current details for verifying identities and managing accounts. For example, social media platforms including banking apps require updating users’ personal information and implement multi-layered security measures to protect accounts. This advantage reduces the risk of unauthorized access and fraud, as outdated or incorrect information could be exploited by malicious actors. Secondly, these organizations can offer personalized and target entertainment, which enhances user experience and convenience. This is clearly exemplified when people shop on social media platforms such as Amazon or Facebook. Because groups have their identity information, they can recommend customers about good products or quality. Thus, the buying process is expedited, fostering a convenient customer experience.
On the other hand, posting personal data on the Internet though large companies has substantial drawbacks. To begin with, the private information shared online, including secret files, studies or images can be leaked by these companies for other purposes. When companies have users’ information, they may disclose it with third parties, leading to customers being harassed by unsolicited contacts based on the information that companies possess. For instance, unwanted calls advertising products or insurance from lesser-known firms can be a nuisance. This solution not only disrupts users’ work but also has a detrimental impact on the mental health of individuals. Additionally, providing private information to large organizations, including one’s name, address and social security number can be exploited for illicit purposes such as financial fraud. Scammers can use details about a person’s life such as relationships, or habits to manipulate users into divulging confidential information or making financial transactions that benefit the fraudsters.
In conclusion, although providing personal data to large companies or organizations has some relatively minor conveniences, it is a negative development considering the risk of fraud. Personally, I strongly believe that giving our own information to large internet corporations could bring more disadvantages than benefits.
