In today’s fast-paced media environment, news outlets increasingly prioritize reports on crises, violence, disasters over stories that highlight progress and success. While there are several valid reasons why such content dominates headlines, I largely agree that this trend has adverse consequences on both individuals and society.
On the one hand, it is understandable why media tends to emphasize alarming events. First and foremost, this emphasis comes down to the economic side. By deliberately publishing sensational and clickbait stories that trigger strong emotional reactions, media outlets can attract massive online engagement, thereby boosting their advertising revenue and overall profits. Additionally, in many cases, reporting on emergencies is essential. For example, during pandemic or natural disasters, early warnings enable the public to identify the potential risks and take timely preventive measures.
On the other hand, the problem arises when media coverage lacks balance. By overlooking positive developments, such as breakthroughs in medicine and technology, or acts of kindness in everyday life, the media may unintentionally create a distorted perception of reality. As a result, citizens are more likely to develop a sense of fear, helplessness, or even distrust in institutions. For instance, when reading too much news about refugees carrying out crimes, people will have prejudices against all refugees, claiming that they are threat to their country. From a social perspective, such focus on negative news can lead to political unrest. This is because citizens may blame the government for poorly making-decision choices, in turn, they will lose faith in national authorities. Consequently, there may be more demonstrations or riots against the government.
In conclusion, although there are some merits in emphasizing pressing issues, excessive exposure to negative news can be detrimental to individual well-being and the health of society. Media organizations should strive to present a more balanced view of the world, one that informs but also inspires.
