In today’s digitally driven world, mobile phones serve as an integral part of our day-to-day lives. Besides phone calls, they provide a myriad of other services that aid in facilitating daily routines. While their advantages are uncountable, their drawbacks cannot go unnoticed, as they cause as much harm as their benefits.
On one side of the coin, mobile phones are now essential for internet consumption, which includes keeping up to date with the news, friends, and work. Whilst in the earlier days, connecting with the outside world required multiple other devices, such as a landline phone and a computer, nowadays people can use one device to operate multiple functions in mere seconds. On the environmental aspect, browsing information online saves numerous physical papers, as people currently can access news, books, academic research papers all in the palm of their hands without wasting resources. Consequently, utilising the mobile phone became more eco-friendly than producing books or newspapers.
On the contrary, the constant online prescence of individuals has caused severe dependance on the internet and a gap in communication. It has become an increasing phenomenon that the younger generations, students in particular, have developed extreme dependance on their phones and its functions. If students can no longer develop their crtical thinking abilities and are consistently using the internet, or more recently Artifical intelligance, then their academic progress and integrity are in danger, thus the future of the community could be in danger consequently. Ironically, while mobiles facilitate communication, it had resulted in social communication faliure amongst the older and younger generation as most of the youth rely on texting rather than physical communication.
To conclude, while the mobile phone is a multi purpose device, it had also created structural issues in the upcoming generations that need immediate intervention.
