In recent times, due to the advancements in technology, social media like Facebook and Twitter is being used more frequently. As a result, it replaces face-to-face contact. I believe that this is a positive development; however it has a lot of drawbacks.
On the one hand, social media makes our lives easier by significantly saving our time and preventing the spread of disease. For instance, during the 2020 pandemic, many schools implemented online lessons, which helped to continue education without the further spread of the virus. Furthemore, the ability of social media such as Zoom and Skype made it possible to connect from everywhere to anywhere offering opportunities such as online conferences. In addition to that, it dramatically contributes to the economy because companies can hire people with better qualifications from other countries to work online.
On the other hand, excess usage of apps like TikTok and Instagram can cause an addiction that would affect a person’s mental health, relationships, and financial condition in the long-term. For example, getting pleasure from excess social media usage is also known as cheap dopamine, which can cause demotivation and procrastination. Many people believe that having more than 4 hours of screen time can cause permanent eye strain. Moreover, social media made real-life interaction less emotional because being able to contact anyone at any time made people appreciate face-to-face contacts less.
In conclusion, even though social media has revolutionised how we communicate today it still offers drawbacks mentioned above. In my opinion, couple hours of social media a day will not have negative influence, but reverse.
