The debate over whether governments should keep allocating monetary ressources on sustaining and expanding their armed forces, is a highly controversial topic.
History has told us that solving conflics with violence costs many human lifes and comes with societal trauma, that will survive generations. However, once again, war has come upon us. The Russian invasion of the Ukraine as well as the conflict in Israel are questioning the entire world order, pushing countries to invest in their defense. Even the detonation of nuclear weapons appears to be a possible scenario again, stimulating a feeling of insecurity and fear in millions of people. In my opinion war is not a solution and collectivly investing in military structures is fostering war.
In addition, the enourmous investments in military development, hold us from solving more relevant, and pressing issues. The 21st century comes with challenges such as climate change and environmental degradation, that are putting our planitary survival at risk.
Instead of investing in the development and production of military equipment, to protect each other from one another, it is time to implement strategies for peaceful conflict management, that allow us to build international solidarity. Instead of protecting terretory and borders, country´s have to start working together, focusing on securing the well-being of nature and of our future generations. To summarize, even though military investments seem inevitable, in my opinion their are other solutions and more relevant topics for governments to fucus on. By establishing new ways of international conflict management, the money from military ressources could be allocated to sustainable development.
