The topic of having either a few children or many children in this modern society has become a major discussion. Whilst having more than one child brings some advantages, raising an only child also has its own benefits. This essay will explore the advantages and disadvantages of living with a big family.
As a parent with a small number of children, the obvious advantage is that the smaller amount of finance spent for the children. This means to be able to properly raise a healthy child, parents are required to be financially capable as they have to provide, at very least, the basic necessity for their children. For example, providing a proper education and nutritious meals can cost up to hundreds dollar per month for one child. As a result, parents should earn more income to be able to afford having one or two children. On the other hand, having a big family can benefit both parents and the children as well. A child can train their social skills earlier from home by having a sibiling. E.g. sharing their stuff and treating other people. This can be very impactful for their social skills later in the wider society.
The major drawback for parents having an only child is that they are acquired to be always physically and emotionally present for their kid. A child require not only financial safety but also a source of emotional safety where they can feel safe enough to pour their emotional problems. For instance, a parent can also act as a friend who plays with the kid after school. By not having a sibling, this should be fulfilled by the parents and this can be an obstacle, especially for working parents, to always be there for their child. On the contrary, the disadvantage of being a parent with too many children is that they have to always be fair for all of their kids. Favoritism is an unavodiable issue for raising more than one child as every child has their own uniqness, especially in term of personality.
